Tenth Grade Students Participate in Cross-County Book Club

Over the course of a five to six week period, four teachers and approximately two hundred students will choose and read one of eight young adult novels with a theme of social justice at its core. The culminating project will be an analytical expository essay to the following prompt:

A society is made up of a diverse group of people from a variety of backgrounds, socio-economic levels, beliefs and values. At one time or another in our lives, we all encounter situations in which we face unfair, unjustified, or incorrect attitudes toward us, just because we belong to a certain race, family, team, or live in a certain house or neighborhood. Write an essay in which you discuss the causes and consequences of prejudice and injustice. How does an individual’s response to them reveal his/her true character? Be sure to support your analysis with examples from your Book Club text.   

The goals of this book club are

  • to encourage thinking about the ideas in these books

  • to broaden understanding of themes and the development of characters by discussing these books with others, and

  • to learn from the perspectives of others.
